Gurjeet Jutley - A Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon



Gurjeet Jutley is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon based at Oxford University Hospital. Gurjeet jutley has sub-speciality interest in complex cataract surgery and glaucoma. As the OUH’s department lead for glaucoma, he provides treatments including conventional glaucoma surgery (including trabeculectomy and tube surgeries) minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) and endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation laser treatments.

From an early stage, Gurjeet has managed patients in various ophthalmic emergencies, providing solutions for conditions including penetrating eye injuries, lid lacerations and blow out fractures. Gurjeet spent five years at the Moorfields and Western Eye hospitals whilst undergoing training at the North Thames Deanery. Gurjeet has been a Novartis Glaucoma Award finalist, with this case being published in the influential peer-reviewed journal BMC. He is the author of the notable textbook ‘Ophthalmology at a Glance’ and a University College London Ophthalmology MSc lecturer. He has won five postgraduate prizes and is responsible for setting exams at the International Council of Ophthalmology. During his career, he has also been a part of a number of international presentations, penned textbook chapters and has several peer-reviewed publications.

Since January 2018, he has been the Oxford University Hospital glaucoma department lead and reworked the virtual service offered to patients, collaborating with the lead optometrist and developing a protocol to safely transfer patients to this service from the clinic. All virtual assessments are closely reviewed and assessed by Gurjeet personally. This ensures standards relating to safety are upheld. Gurjeet plans to audit the service in 2019. He also developed the Trust’s minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) service. OUH is now one of only twenty UK centres offering cyclophotocoagulation (ECP). A regional paradigm for clinical indications of trabeculectomy, tube surgery, Xen implants and ECP has also been produced by Gurjeet.

Gurjeet has a strong interest in teaching, running monthly teaching sessions at the Oxford Association for the Blind. He has also been involved with the teaching of Oxford Deanery trainees and currently runs a department session for trainee and trained optometrists on a weekly basis. Gurjeet is an invited speaker both Nationally and Internationally, sharing his expertise in managing all aspects of Glaucoma and Cataract surgery.
