Are the video games that you buy your children this Christmas damaging their eyesight?

FEBRUARY, 2019
Many parents will be buying video games for their children this festive season. Video games have been a big part of popular culture for generations now, but can they cause eyesight problems? Read on to find out whether video games could be compromising the quality of your child’s vision.
How gameplay can affect the eyes
When people play video games for a long period of time, they can experience unpleasant symptoms including blurred vision, headaches, fatigue and eye discomfort. One of the reasons for this is that people can be reluctant to take breaks once they become fully immersed in the action. The eyes can struggle to focus when gameplay isn’t interrupted by regular breaks. The focus of the eye constantly changes when people look at video screens. This results in the eyes becoming tired very quickly. Eyes can struggle to focus on other objects even after gameplay has come to an end.
The importance of breaks
Another reason why the eyes might start to feel irritated is that gamers blink much less regularly when they are immersed in their hobby. This results in dryness and irritation. If your children are avid gamers, encourage them to take five-minute breaks every twenty minutes or so. Encourage them to sit as far away from the screen as possible, aiming for a six-foot minimum.
Does my child need eye treatment?
There are a number of things to look out for if you do suspect your child requires help with their vision. They may have started to squint more, or they may be covering one of their eyes in order to experience clearer vision. Some children tilt their heads when experiencing reduced visual quality. Amblyopia is a common condition amongst children and is sometimes referred to as ‘lazy eye’. The tilting of the head and covering of one eye can both be symptoms of amblyopia. Perhaps your child has started to rub their eyes excessively or is sitting extremely close to the television? They could have myopia if their vision only becomes clear at close range. Eye pain, headaches and difficulty concentrating can also be signs of poor-quality vision.

How lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise can affect people living with glaucoma? - gurjeet Jutley

Gurjeet Jutley - We are often asked by our patients if any lifestyle modifications can help manage glaucoma. This is an interesting topic and is worth exploring, as some evidence does exist that lifestyle factors may exert an influence on eye pressure. In this article, Gurjeet Jutley explores how lifestyle choices can impact your condition. Food and drink Caffeine Large amounts of caffeine can have the effect of raising the pressure in your eyes, as well as having systemic detriment to the body as a whole. Where possible, aim to reduce caffeine intake, particularly if more than five strong cups are consumed daily. Alcohol Excessive alcohol drinking can damage the optic nerve, so called toxic neuropathy. We also see instantaneous optic nerve damage with methanol ingestion.
